KARACHI: As many as 764 players participated in the Horlicks 27th Pakistan Scrabble Championship at the Expo Centre here on Sunday, making it a record-breaking event.
It was the biggest scrabble tournament in Southeast Asia and the second largest scrabble tournament in the world. It was also the largest tournament of any single sport in Pakistan’s history.
Players as young as six and as old as 70 competed in their respective age categories. Still a vast majority of the participants were school children with over 100 schools from Karachi actively taking part in the event.
For the first time players from all four provinces of Pakistan as well as the federal capital flew to Karachi to take part in the historic event.
Another salient feature of the event was that the organising team of the tournament that consisted of teenage players (average age 16 only) who have represented Pakistan in international events.
The chief guest Ms Tooba Hussain of Horlicks distributed prizes among the winners.
On the occasion, the tournament director Mr. Tariq Pervez also announced the Pakistan team which will take part in the World Youth Scrabble Championship which will be held in Perth, Australia from October 31 to November 2.
